Did you know:

Dogs drink by taking the water up there tongues and curling it backward. As they do this continuously and quickly, they build up momentum that forces water to the back of their mouth. As they do not have a full set of cheeks, they are unable to create suction to drink.

How To Properly Approach & Pet A Dog

A Proper Greeting:

Invite the pup to make the initial contact with you by bending down and lowering yourself to their level. If the dog is very fearful, bend down the same way but do not face the dog and wait for the dog to come and brush up against you. NEVER hover over a dog or make direct eye contact at the initial meeting, this is perceived as a threat.

A Proper Pet:

If you are dealing with a friendly dog, they will approach you with a relaxed tail and ears. If you are dealing with a nervous or fearful dog, they will likely back again or act jumpy. Once the dog has a relaxed body posture, eyes, and mouth, or makes brief and subtle eye contact, go in for the pet. A dog who enjoys petting, will typically lean in for more.

Where To Pet:

Dogs are typically comfortable being pet on their chest, tail, under the chin, base of the neck and shoulders. Initiate this movement from the side, raising your hand over their head can be threatening even to the most submissive dog. Another smart option is to ask the owner where their favorite spot is. Gentle massages and light scratches are calming. When you practice, gentle and calm petting, the likelihood is they will lean in for more!

*Remember to resist the urge to pet a dog if you are nervous, dogs are AMAZING at sensing our feelings and emotions, if you are unsure, they will be too*

The Pet Friendly Way To De-Ice This Winter

Posted on February 01, 2017 by Michael Moll

More often than not, the most popular de-icing salt or the cheapest is dangerous to our furry friends. They contain chemicals that can cause skin irritation and burns, digestive upset if ingested and even nervous system problems. The sodium chloride component breaks down in their system and causes sodium toxicity, this results in staggering, lethargy and even seizures.

What most people don't understand is that the risk is not only associated with dogs who eat the salt right from the bag, but the ones who lick it off their paws after being outside. So the next time you need to buy salt, look for bags that have a pet-friendly label on it, they typically contain urea, glycols, or other non-salt components. It is important to know that even these options can cause problems if ingested in large quantities.

 What you will need:

-Lots of your dogs FAVOURITE treats
-Cotton balls or gauze (lots)
-Ear cleaner, one that is reputable, preferably recommended by your Veterinarian

  1. Start off by giving your dog a few treats (if you have a nervous dog then get an assistant to continuously offer your pup small amounts of treats throughout the process)
  2. Wet a cotton ball in ear cleaner
  3. Place the cotton ball on your finger and place it down the ear canal until you feel resistance
  4. Once you have finished with the first cotton ball, massage the base of the ear canal to loosen up any debris stuck at the bottom of the ear
  5. Let your dog shake their head whenever possible, this will also help bring the debris from the lower ear to the surface
  6. Wipe from the inside out, and repeat steps 2 & 3 until your cotton comes out of the ear clean
  7. Once the canal is cleaned, wet another cotton ball and start cleaning all of the little crevices on the pinna (inside flap of the ear)
  8. Always end on a positive note by giving your dog a treat

*If you noticed ALOT of debris or any blood, stop what you are doing and call your Veterinarian, it is likely that your dog has an infection and should be cleaned and treated by a professional*
